Youth Risk and Resiliency Behaviour Survey (15-19 Yrs)
The University of the West Indies in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Jamaica (MoH), the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) and Measure Evaluation of Tulane University and the University of North Carolina is carrying out an island-wide household survey of 15-19 year-olds in order to assess their risk for and resiliency against certain adverse health conditions.
5th Annual Caribbean Reasonings Conference

Annual Retreat for Managers of UWI Bursaries and the Office of Finance
The Annual Retreat for Managers of the Bursaries and the Office of Finance was hosted by the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados over the period May 11-12. The venue for the Annual Retreat is rotated by Campus. This year’s theme – ‘Managing the Financial Requirements of the University Enterprise: The Role of Finance Officers’ was selected in keeping with the University’s programme for the development of the new Strategic Plan 2007-2012.
Caribbean Migration: Forced and Free Conference
The University of the West Indies Migration Study Group will host a conference on “Caribbean Migration: Forced and Free” at the UWI, Mona Campus on June 13 and 14 with an Opening Session on the evening of June 12. This conference will immediately precede a conference on the Diaspora being organized by Jamaica’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in association with the UWI (June 15-16). It is anticipated that the linkages between the themes of the two conferences will enrich both.
CARIMAC Summer Programme
The Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication will be offering its annual Summer Programme with a range of exciting courses geared toward professionals, potential media and communication practitioners and individuals interested in sharpening their communication skills. The Summer Programme begins on June 5 and continues until July 29. Champions for Life Summer Camp
The UWI, Sports Department will be staging ‘Champions for Life 2006’ a Summer Camp with a difference for children between the ages of 8-16 years under the theme “Building Bridges of Hope and Champions for Life” at the UWI, Mona Bowl from July 10-21. It will seek to teach life skills through sports and build bridges between various groups. The camp will include presentations from motivational speakers and sports personalities along with sporting instructions by National Coaches. Basketball, Track and Field, Netball, Football, Volleyball and Swimming will be offered.
Jamaica History Society
The Jamaica History Society will present a talk “Regulating the Movement of Jamaica’s Cultural Property” on Tuesday, June 20. The presenter is Ms. Andrea Richards of the Institute of Jamaica, and the talk will be held at St. Andrew Parish Library at 6:00 p.m.
Summer School at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI
The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA) will be offering the following Certificate courses this summer: Voice & Speech Training, Introduction to Sign Language 1, Short Story Writing, Writing Children's Story, Floral Arrangement for Weddings, Introduction to Garment Construction 1, Creative Hat Decorating (for Church & formal occasions), Hand Embroidery & Needle work, Soft Furnishing (bedroom) and Macrame. The aim of the courses is not only to develop creativity but to equip individuals with income generating skills. These skills are also very good leisure time therapy.

Caribbean Child Research Conference October 25th - 26th
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in partnership with the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), UWI, the Caribbean Child Development Centre (CCDC), UWI, the Early Childhood Commission (ECC) and the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) will be hosting a research conference on children’s issues under the theme “Promoting Children’s Rights through Research”.
