2006- 2007 UWI Venture Competition (UWIVC)

The UWI Venture Competition (UWIVC) is the premier business plan competition of the region where teams of MBA and graduate business students present their business ideas to compete for the coveted role of representing the UWI at the Opportunity Funding Corporation Venture Challenge in Atlanta, USA. Students entering the competition benefit from entrepreneurial opportunities and experiences.

Drama in Education

The University of the West Indies, through the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, will host the Fifth International Drama in Education Research Institute (IDIERI) from July 13-18 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, Kingston. The IDIERI theme is “Returning the Gaze, Reclaiming the Voice: Post Colonialism and its Implications for Drama and Education”.

Four Receive Prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence

The Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence for the 2005/2006 academic year will go to four members of staff based at the Cave Hill, Mona and St Augustine campuses of The University of the West Indies. At Mona, the awardees are Professor Helen Jacobs of the Department of Chemistry, for Research Accomplishments, and Mr. Cordel Nelson, Senior Assistant Registrar (Examinations) in the Registry for Service to the University Community.

Graduation Photographs

The Public Relations Office wishes to remind graduates who took graduation photographs from 1995 – present, that they may be collected from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays to Fridays from the Public Relations Office, Gibraltar Hall Road, Mona Campus.

July-at-the-UWI Programme

The Tenth July-at-the-UWI programme for children ages 11- 17 years, will run from July 17 to August 6, 2006. This enrichment programme, designed to expose pre-university children to the UWI as a regional institution, and to the science and culture of the Caribbean countries served by the UWI, is offered in two modules. The first module (July 17 - 28) is Mona campus based and the second module (July 30 - August 6) is based in Trinidad and Antigua. Partial scholarships are available for children of UWI staff who satisfy certain specified criteria.

Mental Health Tips for the Hurricane Season

 When there is a natural disaster all aspects of peoples’ lives will be affected. Physical needs take priority in the period immediately after the disaster but it is also important to pay attention to emotional needs. How we feel will help to determine how well we are able to cope with the stresses.

US Ambassador to Address CETT Teacher of the Year Awards Dinner

The Caribbean Centre of Excellence for Teacher Training (Caribbean CETT) will host its first Teacher of the Year Awards Dinner on Tuesday, July 18 at 7.00 p.m. at the Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort and Spa, Ocho Rios. Ambassador of the United States of America to Jamaica, Mrs. Brenda Johnson, will be the guest speaker.
Thirteen exemplary teachers in the Caribbean CETT Project for 2005 will be honoured at the function. The teachers from across the Caribbean have been selected based on performance, from the over four hundred teachers involved in the project in five Caribbean countries.

Vehicle Access Stickers

Access Stickers for the 2006/2007 academic year will be distributed from the Human Resources Management Division (HRMD) between 9.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. daily beginning Wednesday, August 2, 2006. Please note that current stickers will expire on September 30, 2006. After that date, vehicles with any other than the 2006/2007 stickers will not be allowed access to the campus via the Queen’s Way entrance, nor be able to use the Aqueduct gate to the hospital.

INSTALLATION OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS – HERMITAGE/QUEEN’S WAY INTERSECTION

As part of its efforts to improve the flow of traffic and enhance the security of members of the campus community, the University has been in discussion with the National Works Agency to identify ways of facilitating easier exit from and access/entry to the campus via the Queen’s Way gate.
After conducting a traffic count and a pedestrian survey, the National Works Agency has given approval for traffic signals to be installed at the Hermitage/Queen’s Way intersection with an additional left turn slip-way for vehicles turning onto Queen’s Way.

Brendan Bain Honoured by MAJ

Professor Brendan Bain of the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry was honoured recently by the Medical Association of Jamaica (MAJ). Their citation to him commended him for the role he played as the lead coordinator of the UWI HIV/AIDS Response Programme UWI/HARP whose mission is to build and harness capacity within the university in order to contribute maximally to the national, regional and international effort to control the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
