“Caribbean Regional Conference on Philanthropy” September 26-29
The University of the West Indies Development and Endowment Fund (the UWI Fund) in collaboration with the National Center for Black Philanthropy Incorporated (Washington D.C., USA) will host the Caribbean Conference on Philanthropy, on September 26-29, 2004 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston. The theme of the conference is “The Relevance of Philanthropy in Developing Nations.” This four-day conference will underscore the value of philanthropy to the growth and development of the Caribbean region.
Climax of Credit Union’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations
The (UWI) Mona & Community Co-op. Credit Union Ltd. brings its 50th anniversary celebrations to a grand climax with a series of events during the month of June. They are as follows: 50th Anniversary Exhibition – June 14 – 18 at the UWI, Main Library. The opening ceremony will be Monday, June 14 at 10:00 a.m. and the exhibition will be declared open by Professor Kenneth Hall, Pro-Vice Chancellor & Principal, UWI, Mona. There will also be a health fair at the Main Library put on by the Credit Union and the Health Centre between 10: 00 a.m. and 12 noon, Monday June 14.
DLIS Course - Macromedia Authorware: An Introductory Workshop
The Department of Library and Information Studies will host the following two courses during the summer: Macromedia Authorware: An Introductory Workshop from June 29 to July 1 and Introduction to Greenstone Digital Library Software from July 19 to 23.
Fifth Student Exchange
Eleven Mona students will be participating this year in the Fifth Student Exchange between the UWI, Mona and Colombian Universities. Students will be attached to the University del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia from June 21 to July 19. Mona will receive students from Colombia June 24-July 22.
Maureen Warner-Lewis receives the 2004 Gordon K and Sybil Lewis Award
The book, Central Africa in the Caribbean: Transcending Time, Transforming Culture, by retired UWI Professor, Maureen Warner-Lewis, and published by the UWI Press received the 2004 Gordon K and Sybil Lewis Award at the 29th Annual Conference of the Caribbean Studies Association recently. The citation read: "This work is a copious examination of elements of the cultural and historical nexus between societies in Central Africa and the Caribbean Basin.
National Volleyball Team Selection
Congratulations to the students from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, who have been selected as members of Jamaica’s National Senior Volleyball Team. They are scheduled to participate in the 10th Caribbean Volleyball Championships scheduled for June 25 – July 4, 2004 in Barbados. After several weeks of intense training, the women were chosen from a squad of 18 players, while the men were selected from a squad of 21.

Social Welfare Training Centre honours Sybil Francis
On the occasion of her 90th birthday, the Social Welfare Training Centre wishes to honour the indelible contribution Mrs. Sybil Francis has made to the inception and development of the Centre by naming the large refurbished classroom The Sybil Francis Seminar Room.
Summer Science Camp
The Geology Museum, Department of Geography and Geology, UWI Mona, will be hosting a Summer Science Camp for 9 - 12 year olds from July 5 to July 16 2004, at the Geology Museum. The Camp is designed to expose children to various concepts in earth science such as Minerals and Gems, Rocks and Ore, Fossil Shells, Tracks and Bones, Volcanoes and Earthquakes, Archaeology, Maps, and Satellite Images.
Annual Scientific & Business Conference - UWIHARP
The University of the West Indies’ HIV/AIDS Response Programme (UWIHARP) will present its 2nd Annual Scientific & Business Conference from Friday, June 11 to Sunday, June 13. The opening ceremony will take place on Thursday June 10. The conference theme is “HIV/AIDS: Research Partnerships for Action” and the venue is the Knutsford Court Hotel, 11, Ruthven Road, Kingston 10.
