Security Alert

Members of the UWI, Mona Campus community are being asked to exercise caution and be alert when
walking through secluded areas of the campus, for example the Chapel Gardens by the lake as there has been a recent incident of robbery in this area.

The School of Continuing Studies hosts Country Conference Series

The School of Continuing Studies, UWI will host another in its Country Conference Series with the St. Lucia Conference from November 18 to 20, 2004 in Castries, St. Lucia. The St. Lucia Conference is a multi-disciplinary conference focusing on issues relevant to St. Lucia. This is the ninth conference in the School's Country Conference Series. The conference will be open to the public and will provide a forum for the discussion of local issues. The School is inviting abstracts from persons with a research interest in St. Lucia. Deadline for the receipt of abstracts is September 27.

Yvette Jackson Promoted To Professor

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Yvette Jackson, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, to the rank of Professor, with effect from May 20, 2004.

“Caribbean Regional Conference on Philanthropy”

A number of interesting persons have agreed to make presentations at first Caribbean Conference on Philanthropy, on September 26-29, 2004 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston. The conference is being planned by The University of the West Indies Development and Endowment Fund (the UWI Fund) in collaboration with the National Center for Black Philanthropy Incorporated (Washington D.C., USA).

Extended Opening Hours - Admissions Section

Members of the Public and the University community are asked to note that the extended opening hours of the Admissions Section have been suspended since July 1 to August 13, 2004. Opening hours will therefore be: Monday to Friday - 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Section will revert to extended hours on August 16, 2004 - Monday to Thursday - 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

MSB/PSOJ Symposium

The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) and the Mona School of Business (MSB), UWI, have joined forces to host, “Trade Connections: Your Link to the World”, a special symposium on the evolving international trade arena, on Wednesday, July 14. The symposium will be held at the Knutsford Court Hotel, Ruthven Road, Kingston from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Keynote opening speaker will be the Honourable K.D.

UWI Mona Games Village for Special Olympics Caribbean Games

The first Special Olympics Caribbean Games will take place in Jamaica from July 8 to 11. The events will be held at the National Stadium, the Stadium pool and the UWI Mona Bowl while the Rex Nettleford Hall on the UWI, Mona campus will serve as the Games Village.

UWI to Award Thirteen Honorary Degrees

The University of the West Indies will award thirteen honorary degrees at graduation ceremonies to be held at its three campuses at Cave Hill, Barbados, Mona, Jamaica and St. Augustine in Trinidad and Tobago, later this year.

Workshop on Leading Organisational Transformation

The MSc. Human Resource Development Programme, UWI, Mona and the Inter-American Development Bank will host a workshop on Leading Organisational Transformation from Wednesday, July 14 to Sunday, July 1. The cost will be JA$10,000.00 and includes the main reading materials, coffee breaks and lunch for each day. The sessions have been scheduled from Wednesday to Sunday to facilitate persons who cannot afford to miss too many days from work. The class sessions will be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday 14th to Saturday 17th and from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Geology Museum Summer Science Camp

The Geology Museum, Department of Geography and Geology, UWI Mona, will be hosting its Summer Science Camp for 9 - 12 year olds from July 5 to July 16, 2004, at the Geology Museum. The camp is designed to expose children to various concepts in earth science such as minerals and gems, rocks and ore, fossil shells, tracks and bones, volcanoes and earthquakes, archaeology, maps, and satellite images. The camp will be held Mondays to Fridays, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost for the camp is $5,000.
