Call for Papers - Faculty of Medical Sciences Annual Research Conference
The Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI Mona will host its Annual Research Conference from November 10 to 12, 2004 and is inviting abstracts for the presentation of oral and poster presentations at the meeting. A number of prizes will be available to students and the deadline for the submission of abstracts is July 31, 2004. DLIS Course - Creating an Index using Microsoft Word XP
The Department of Library and Information Studies, University of the West Indies will host the four hour course, Creating an Index using Microsoft Word XP from June 14-15 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. each day. The venue for the course is the Department’s Computer Lab, DLIS and the cost is $1,000. The objective of the hands-on workshop is to teach participants how to create an index for a Microsoft Word document using the built-in indexing features of Microsoft Word XP. Participants must know the basics of, and regularly use MS Word as their word processing software.
Research Skills Training Workshop
The Epidemiology Research Unit of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute (TMRI), UWI in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH), Jamaica and the Caribbean Health Research Council, Trinidad and Tobago will host a basic Research Skills Training Workshop from June 14 to 17 the venue will be Altamont Court Hotel, 1 Altamont Terrace, Kingston 5 (New Kingston) (and not at the Sickle Cell Unit as previously advertised).
BROAD MEDICAL RESEARCH PROGRAM
The Eli and Edythe L. Broad Foundation is interested in funding basic or clinical inflammatory bowel disease ( IBD) research projects that are innovative; are in the early stages of exploration; will improve diagnosis, therapy or prevention of IBD in the near future; and are not ready for funding by more traditional granting agencies. Grants will be awarded to not-for-profit institutions worldwide, such as universities, hospitals and research institutes. Requests for funding must be preceded by a brief Letter of Interest (up to three pages, not including attachments).
16th AASC Committee Meets Jean Bertrand Aristide
Members of the planning committee of the just concluded 16th All African Students Conference (AASC) held at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies, May 20-22 met with former Haitian President, Jean Bertrand Aristide at his residence in St. Ann on Labour Day. The eight students and faculty advisor Professor Verene Shepherd presented Mr. Aristide with a plaque and a citation designed to recognise his presence in Jamaica, his efforts to seek reparations for the Haitian people and for being the “Titid” of the poor.
Applications for the Bentley Fellowship
The International Development Research Centre of Canada is inviting applications for the Bentley Fellowship which provides funding for on-farm research. This fellowship provides assistance to Canadian or developing country students or researchers with a University degree in Agriculture, Forestry or Biology, who wish to undertake post-graduate, applied, on-farm research in a developing country with cooperating farmers. Projects should evaluate and/or promote the use of fertility enhancing plants such as leguminous forages, cover crops and grain legumes in subsistence tropical agriculture.

Fundamentals of English Course
The Human Resources Management Division, UWI Mona will be conducting a course in Fundamentals of English. The course will be for nine (9) weeks from Tuesday, June 1 to Friday, July 30, 2004, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays (one day per week for nine weeks for each participant) from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. each day. The venue will be the Social Welfare Training Centre. Target groups include secretaries at and above the level of Senior Secretary; Administrative Assistants at and above Grade 1 and Office Managers and other staff whose functions include the writing of minutes and/or reports.
Masters in International Trade Policy
The UWI Cave Hill Campus in Barbados is inviting interested persons to apply for admission to its Masters in International Trade Policy Programme which will commence August 1, 2004. The Masters in International Trade Policy is a unique programme offering comprehensive training in critical areas of Trade Policy Theory and Practice, in the context of Caribbean needs and realities. It will be delivered in collaboration with International Trade Policy and Law.
