Symposium on “The Haiti-Jamaica Connection

The Latin American-Caribbean Centre (LACC), University of the West Indies, Mona will host a one-day Symposium titled “The Haiti-Jamaica Connection” on Saturday, April 3 at Mona. The Symposium is part of the annual series of Inter-Regional Migration Seminars and is timely in light of recent events. The symposium is being organised to mark the Bicentennial of Haiti’s independence and will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) Faculty of Humanities and Education on the Mona Campus. Keynote speaker will be Dr.

TMRI Seminar

The Tropical Metabolism Research Institute (TMRI) will host a special seminar on the topic 'Quality of Care for Adults with Diabetes' on Monday, March 29, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre. The presenter is Dr. Alafia Samuels MD, MPH from the Department of Epidemiology, Johns Hopkins University Pro-Health.

UWI Alumni Association

All UWI graduates are encouraged to join the UWI Alumni Association. Membership in the Association shows pride and involvement in your alma mater. Graduates may call 927-1583 and join over the phone. All life members are asked to call, so that the association can verify the information on its database and update records for those who joined in the 1950s – 1980s.

UWI Medical Alumni Movie Premier

The UWI Medical Alumni Association, Jamaica Chapter will be hosting a special screening of the film One Love on Monday, April 5 at Island Cinema in New Kingston. Cocktails will be served at 7:30 p.m. while showtime is at 8:30 p.m. The film, which was shot in Jamaica, stars Ky-mani Marley and Cherine Anderson and the screenplay was written by Trevor Rhone. Tickets cost $1000.00 and proceeds are in aid of the Medical Intermediate Care Unit, University Hospital of the West Indies.

Blood Drive

The University of the West Indies in partnership with the Pan American/World Health Organisations and the National Blood Transfusion Service will host a blood drive on Tuesday, March 23 from 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall (Mona Campus). Low risk individuals, including professionals and tertiary level students are being urged to donate blood in an effort to increase the nation’s blood supply. CARIMAC Entrance Test for Admission September 2004

Students who have applied to the University of the West Indies, and are interested in pursuing the Media and Communication major, as well as current UWI students wishing to transfer from other majors, are required to sit an Entrance Test on Friday, April 2 at 10:00 a.m. Candidates MUST take their ‘UWI Offer Letter” as well as valid identification. Successful candidates who do not matriculate to the UWI cannot be admitted to the CARIMAC Programme.

Dr. Maureen Samms-Vaughan

Dr. Maureen Samms-Vaughan, of the Section of Child Health, Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health, UWI, Mona has been appointed chairman of the National Early Childhood Commission by the Governor General, on the advice of the Prime Minister, after consultation with the Leader of the Opposition. She received her instrument of appointment, along with other members of the Commission, in October 2003. Her term of office is six years in the first instance. The Early Childhood Commission was established by an act of Parliament in March, 2003.

Faculty of Pure and Applies Sciences Annual Awards Ceremony

The Annual Awards Ceremony for the undergraduate students of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences will take place on Thursday, March 25 at 3:00 p.m. in the New Chemistry Lecture Theatre. The Keynote Speaker will be Mr. Johnathan D. Farley, Department of Applied Mathematics, Massachusetts, Institute of Technology. Members of the Campus community are invited to attend.

Faculty of Social Sciences Annual Awards Ceremony

The Annual Faculty Awards Ceremony for the Faculty of Social Sciences will take place on Thursday, March 25 at 5:30 p.m. in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre. Guest Speaker will be Mrs. Marcia McDonough, Regional Sales Manager, Jamaica and North Caribbean for Air Jamaica. Members of the Campus community are invited to attend.

Forum on Environmental Sustainability through Education

The School of Education, UWI Mona will present a forum titled Environmental Sustainability through Education on Monday, March 22 at 5:30 p.m. at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at Mona.
