Dr. Julia A. Horrocks receives Prestigious Award in Ocean Science
Marine Ecologist Dr. Julia A. Horrocks is one of only five 2004 recipients of a Pew Marine Conservation Fellowship – the world’s most prestigious award honoring and investing in Applied Ocean Conservation Science and Outreach. Dr. Horrocks, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences at the UWI Cave Hill Campus receives US$150,000 over three years to carry out innovative, interdisciplinary projects related to marine conservation. Dr. Horrocks will use the award to expand and strengthen her sea turtle conservation work in the Caribbean.
Fourth Biennial Lucille Mathurin Mair Public Lecture
The Mona Unit, Centre for Gender and Development Studies, will be hosting its Fourth Biennial Lucille Mathurin Mair Public Lecture, on Thursday, March 11, 2004, at the Old Library, University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, in commemoration of International Women’s Day 2004.
General Meeting- Caribbean Academy of Sciences, Jamaica Chapter
The second general meeting of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences, Jamaica Chapter will be held on Saturday, March 13 in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre, C5, beginning at 10:00 a.m. All members and interested persons are invited to attend. Persons who have been nominated for membership may pay their dues at the meeting and interested persons may apply for membership. The keynote address titled, The Jamaican Energy Market will be delivered by Dr. Raymond Wright, Group Managing Director, Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica.
Instructional Development Unit
The Instructional Development Unit will host its first workshop in a series on course evaluation on Wednesday, March 10 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the IDU Training Room. The session is entitled Course Evaluation: Defining, Purpose and Models and will be conducted by Miss Meta Bogle and Dr. Beryl Allen. Mona Association of Postgraduate Students
On Thursday March 18 2004, the Mona Association of Postgraduate Students (MAPS) in association with the Counselling Unit of the University Health Centre will host a session titled "Tips for Graduate Success". The session is aimed at helping graduate students cope with the pressures of postgraduate studies as well as well as helping students dealing with the stresses of graduate research.
Three-Day Training Conference
The Jamaica Association of Social Workers will host a three-day Training Conference from March 12 to 14 in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona Campus. Topics to be discussed include Treating Children who are Traumatized by Sexual Violence; Working with Survivors of Rape in the Jamaican Setting; Sexual Violence among Children: A Jamaican Perspective; and Signs of Depression and Treatment in Children and Adults. Presenters will include Dr. Joan Lesser, Smith College, Massachusetts; Dr Marlene Cooper, Fordham University, New York; Mrs. Maureen Little, Dr. Charles Thesiger and Dr.
Commuting Students’ Barbecue
The Commuting Students’ Committee, Office of Students Services will host a barbecue on March 3 on the lawns of the Commuting Students’ Lounge between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
Graduation Photographs
The Public Relations Office wishes to remind graduates who took graduation photographs over the past fifteen (15) years, that they may be collected between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Mondays to Fridays from the Public Relations Office, Gibraltar Hall Road, Mona Campus.
