Research & Publications and Graduate Awards

The Campus Research & Publications and Graduate Awards Committee is inviting applications for Research and Publications and Graduate Awards. Applications forms are available on the website at www.mona.uwi.edu\postgrad Applicants must submit signed copies of application forms in duplicate no later than May 4, 2004. Applications received after the closing date will be considered at the next meeting.

Social Welfare Training Centre Graduation Exercise

The Graduation exercise for the 41st regional four month course in the Principles and Practices of Social Work, will be held on Thursday, April 29 at 5:30 p.m. on the lawn of the Social Welfare Training Centre at UWI, Mona.

Tribute to Professor Maureen Warner-Lewis

The Department of Literatures in English will pay tribute to Professor Maureen Warner–Lewis on the occasion of her retirement from the University of the West Indies on Wednesday, May 5 at 7.00 p.m. at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts.

Volunteers needed for Children’s Home

Word Time Ministries of Jamaica, a non-profit voluntary youth organization is seeking volunteers from UWI to tutor the boys and girls at the Jamaica Christian Boys’ Home (7 Oxford Road, New Kingston) and the Musgrave Girls’ Home (Lady Musgrave Road).

Special International Group Programmes 12th Anniversary Exhibition

The Special International Group Programmes (SIGPs) of the Office of Administration and Special Initiatives, The Vice Chancellery, UWI, celebrates its 12th Anniversary with an Exhibition mounted at the Undercroft, Senate Building, The UWI Mona Campus on Thursday and Friday, April 22 and 23, 2004, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day. On display will be pcitures, publications, video and other audio-visual materials showcasing the accomplishments of the office since its inception in April 1992.

30th Anniversary Celebrations of MONATS (1974-2004)

The Mona Administrative and Technical Staff Association (MONATS) formerly MONASA, is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year. To mark this significant milestone, a week of activities is being planned for June 6 to 12, at the Mona Campus. On Sunday, June 6, there will be a Church Service at the University Chapel commencing at 9:15 a.m. On Monday, June 7 the Opening Ceremony will take place at the Undercroft of the Senate Building at 10:00 a.m.

Change of Venue for Annual Nursing Midwifery Conference

The Annual Nursing Midwifery Conference of the Department of Advanced Nursing Education will be held at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, May 13 & 14, 2004, instead of the former venue. All other arrangements remain unchanged. Communities in Partnership for Empowerment: A Woodside-UWI Initiative

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus and the Woodside community, St. Mary will host a Conference honouring George Beckford from April 23 to 24, 2004. The venue is the Woodside Community Centre and the Anglican Church at Woodside in St. Mary. The theme is Communities in Partnership for Empowerment: A Woodside/University of the West Indies Initiative. The conference brings together rural community leaders, UWI academics and community based organizations specialists to share the best practices in sustainable community development.

Dr. Wen-Bin Zhang Promoted to Professor

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Wen-Bin Zhang, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, Mona Campus to the rank of Professor, with effect from February 4, 2004.
Professor Zhang holds the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Mathematics and the Master of Science degree in Statistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as well as a Diploma, equivalent to a Master of Science in Mathematics, from Peking University in China.

Faculty of Medical Sciences Forum on Aging

The Faculty of Medical Sciences and the Research and Policy Group, Mona School of Business, UWI Mona, will host a public forum on Aging on Wednesday, April 21 starting at 6:00 p.m. The venue is the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre on the Mona Campus. The theme for the forum is Challenges and Responses to Aging in the Caribbean. The forum is being held against the background of an aging world population due to advances in social conditions and the provision of better health care.
