10th Annual International Conference on Diabetes

The UWI’s Diabetes Outreach Project, UDOP, will host its 10th Annual International Conference on Diabetes from March 4 to 7 at the Renaissance Jamaica Grande Resort Hotel in Ocho Rios. UDOP is organising the conference in association with the Environmental Health Foundation, the Pan American Health Organisation, the World Health Organisation, the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute and the American Diabetes Association. The theme of this year’s conference is New Trends in Diabetes Management. UWI Vice Chancellor, Prof.

Benefit Cricket Match

The University Sub-Aqua Club will host a benefit cricket match on March 21 when they play the Jamaica Scuba Diving Club (JSDC) formerly known as JSAC. This match will be held at the Sir Frank Worrell Cricket Ground, UWI Mona.
The club will also host a “Jamaican Style” Brunch and a sale of other snacks from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Proceeds from the match and brunch will go to the Consie Walters Cancer Hospice. Career Expo 2004

The Office of Placement and Career Services at Mona is currently celebrating Career Awareness Month under the theme Life-long Learning: the Way Forward. Career Month ends with the annual Career Expo which will begin on Thursday, March 4 with the Opening Ceremony at 11:00 a.m. at the Undercroft. The Expo will run from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Assembly Hall on Thursday and from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 5 at the same venue.

DANE

The president and members of the Nurses Association of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas (NACB), have presented the Department of Advanced Nursing Education (DANE), UWI Mona with a framed picture of Bahamian scenes by Eddie Minnis. The gift is in appreciation of the education members of the NACB received form DANE, UWI, over the years.

Haitian Independence

In commemoration of the Bicentenary of Haitian Independence, the Department of History and Archaeology, UWI in conjunction with Liberty Hall and the African Caribbean Institute of Jamaica, presents a public lecture by Dr. Matthew Smith titled, “Now Both Sides of the Hand had a Chance Black Consciousness in Haiti, 1930s,”, at Liberty Hall, 76 Kingston Street on Sunday, February 29 at 3:00 p.m.

The Vice Chancellor’s Cricket Week of Activities

The Vice Chancellor’s Cricket Week of Activities will begin this Sunday, February 29 with the British High Commission playing a UWI Alumni team starting at 11:00 a.m. The week continues on Monday, March 1 with the women’s cricket match starting 10:00 a.m. On Tuesday, the Tertiary Level Institution’s match will begin at 9:30 a.m. while on Wednesday, February 3, the Combined Universities Team will play the Jamaica XI starting at 9:30 a.m. The venue for these matches is the Frank Worrell Cricket Ground at the Mona Bowl and admission is free.

Three-Day Training Conference

The Jamaica Association of Social Workers will host a three-day Training Conference from March 12 to 14 in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona Campus. Topics to be discussed include Treating Children who are Traumatized by Sexual Violence; Working with Survivors of Rape in the Jamaican Setting; Sexual Violence among Children: A Jamaican Perspective; and Signs of Depression and Treatment in Children and Adults. Presenters will include Dr. Joan Lesser, Smith College, Massachusetts; Dr Marlene Cooper, Fordham University, New York; Mrs. Maureen Little, Dr. Charles Thessiger and Dr.

All African Students’ Conference

The Marcus Garvey Movement is pleased to invite interested persons to present papers at the 16th Annual All African Students’ Conference. This will take place at UWI, Mona from May 20 to 22 later this year. The theme for the conference is “The Bicentenary of Haitian Independence and the Historical Significance of the Haitian Revolution: Prospects, Possibilities and Perspectives”. The aim is to commemorate the bicentenary of Haitian independence, and to facilitate meaningful dialogue on the historical significance of the Haitian revolution.

Annual Graduate Recruitment Programme

The Office of Placement and Career Services at UWI, Mona is organising its Annual Graduate Recruitment Programme for finalising students from March 29 to April 26. The programme allows employers who require candidates to fill permanent vacancies in their organisations to interview graduating students. All finalising students who have not yet done so are asked to collect their packages from the Office of Placement and Career Services. Those students who have collected packages are reminded that they must now return to the Office to sign up for interviews.
