Safety and Emergency Management
The University of the West Indies and Safety Emergency Management Systems present “Fire – Prevention, Alarm and Suppression” a presentation by the Jamaica Fire Brigade on Tuesday, April 20 at 10:00 a.m. and “Disaster and You” a presentation by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) on Wednesday, April 21 at 10:00 a.m. The venue will be at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona Campus. Third General Meeting of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences, Jamaica Chapter
The Third General Meeting of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences, Jamaica Chapter will be held on Thursday, April 22, 2004 in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre, C5, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences beginning at 2 p.m. The keynote address titled Science, Technology and Public Policy will be delivered by Professor Denis Benn, Michael Manley Professor of Public Policy and Public Affairs, University of the West Indies. Mona. All members and interested persons are invited to attend.

Youth Support Jamaica 5th International Conference
Youth Support Jamaica will hosts its 5th International Conference on Adolescent Health and Welfare from August 18 to 20 on the UWI Mona Campus. Youth Support Jamaica is a charitable organisation (NGO) which forms part of the international charity, Youth Support. It aims to provide services for families, children and young people; to provide a support network for professionals working with youth; and thirdly to teach and educate both young people themselves and professionals in matters concerning adolescent health and welfare.
CARIMAC Student Spearheads Basic School Project
After more than thirty years, infants at the Ashley All Age & Infant School in Mocho, Clarendon, will finally receive a new toilet facility more suitable for them. The ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the facility was held at the school on March 31, 2004. The facility will comprise two toilet areas, as well as a shower area and is geared towards improving the sanitary conditions at the school. The project is being coordinated by final year CARIMAC student, and resident of the Ashley community, La Donna Manning as part of the Communication Analysis and Planning (CAP 11) course.
Counselling Conference
The International Association for Counselling (IAC) will host a Conference from April 24 to 27 in Jamaica. The conference, to be held at the Runaway Bay HEART Hotel will be held under the theme Crossing Boundaries in Counselling: Global Issues – Local Context. The theme will provide participants with an opportunity to think globally about systemic challenges and then proceed to act locally to eradicate them. The conference’s local organizing committee includes staff members of the Counselling Services at UWI Mona, Dr. Angela Gordon Stair, Head, University Counselling Services; and Ms.
Faculty of Medical Sciences Forum on Aging
The Faculty of Medical Sciences and the Research and Policy Group, Mona School of Business, UWI Mona, will host a public forum on Aging on Wednesday, April 21 starting at 6:00 p.m. The venue is the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre on the Mona Campus. The theme for the forum is Challenges and Responses to Aging in the Caribbean. The forum is being held against the background of an aging world population due to advances in social conditions and the provision of better health care.
Haiti 200: The Haiti/Jamaica Connection
In continuation of the celebration of the bicentenary of the Haitian Revolution and the International Year of the Struggle against Slavery, Haiti 200: The Haiti/Jamaica Connection, an exhibition produced by the National Library of Jamaica, has been mounted in the link way to the Elsa Goveia Reading Room. The exhibition which was on display for the Symposium put on by the Latin American-Caribbean Centre on April 3rd will run until April 16th.

The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts will host a number of events for the month of April. These include a Distinguished Public Lecture by Professor Michael Dash of New York University, USA. The lecture, which is being held in conjunction with UNESCO, is titled, “Two Hundred Years of Solitude: Haiti Then and Now”. The event will be held on Thursday, April 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the Centre. The Centre is also hosting an exhibition of the UWI Camera Club which will run until April 23.
