“Jamaica For Sale” by Esther Figueroa and Diana McCaulay is the title of the documentary being shown as part of the Film Series organized by the UWI Cultural Programme Committee in association with the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work at UWI, Mona. The showing takes place on Friday, April 24, 2009 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1).
“The Dilemma of Freer and Safer Trade”

The Faculty of Social Sciences at The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts another seminar in its public seminar series on Thursday April 30, 2009 at 6 pm at the Graduate Lecture Theatre (GLT) 3. The upcoming seminar is titled, “The Dilemma of Freer and Safer Trade: Coping with the Problem of Foreign Pests and Diseases in an Era of Globalization”. Dr Edward Evans, Assistant Professor and Associate Director, Centre for Tropical Agriculture, University of Florida will be the guest speaker.

Buju Banton Launches New CD at UWI, Mona

The Department of Literatures in English at UWI, Mona in association with Gergamel Music Inc., presents the launch of Buju Banton’s new CD, “Rasta Got Soul”. The Launch takes place on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at 5.30 p.m. at the Undercroft of the Senate Building, UWI, Mona. Cecil Gutzmore, independent scholar will be the guest speaker.

HIV/AIDS Activist Delivers Public Lecture at UWI, Mona

Dr. Winstone Zulu, visiting fellow at Ryerson University in Canada will visit Jamaica between April 15-18, 2009 at the invitation of the Office of the Principal, UWI, Mona. While in Jamaica Dr. Zulu will deliver a public lecture on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 6 pm at Chemistry Lecture Theatre (Chem 5).
Hundreds to be Recognized at Annual UWI, Mona Student Awards Ceremony
The Office of Student Services and Development, UWI, Mona will host the annual Student Awards Ceremony on Saturday, April 18 at 6:30 pm at the Assembly Hall on the Mona Campus. The ceremony is designed to recognize students for academic excellence and highlight outstanding student performance in co-curricular activities, service and leadership. The guest speaker will be Professor Alvin Wint, Pro Vice Chancellor, Office of the Board for Undergraduate Studies, UWI, Mona.

“Exploring the Critical Social Issues Facing the Nation: Education, Health and the Impact of Crime and Violence” is the theme of the 13th annual Derek Gordon Research seminar. It takes place on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 2 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona.
‘Travel RED’

CARIMAC final year student, Kimba-Lee Kirton in association with the Commuting Students Office, UWI, Mona has organized a campaign dubbed “Travel Red” which is designed to promote awareness of the re-introduced taxi policy and to provide a forum to discuss implications and concerns related to the Taxi Policy. As part of this campaign an awareness discussion is being staged on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 2 pm at the Commuting Students Lounge, UWI, Mona.
International Masters Clash at UWI Chess Society /Magnificent Chess Tournament

The UWI Chess Society in collaboration with the Magnificent Chess Foundation struck gold at its recent tournament which was the largest chess tournament hosted in Jamaica. The tournament dubbed “The Magnificent Chess UWI Open” saw the advancement of the quality of chess played within Jamaica featuring a highlighted Master’s section. Within this section GM Alfonso Romero Holmes (Spain), IM Jose Vilela (Cuba), FM Delisle Warner (Barbados), and FM Bengt Hammar (Sweden) went against three of Jamaica’s best, FM Warren Elliot, FM Jomo Pitterson and NM Shane Mathews.
Research Symposium
The Department of Government, UWI, Mona in collaboration with University of Bordeaux-University Antilles-Guyane Cooperation Programme will host a Research Symposium titled, “Problems of Categorization in Creole Societies: Heritage, Appropriation, Innovation”. The Symposium takes place on Monday, April 20, 2009 starting at 9 am at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre (SSLT).
