Hon. Ralph Gonsalves Delivers Lecture in Caribbean Development Series at UWI, Mona
Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr. the Honourable Ralph Gonsalves, will deliver the first lecture in the Public Lecture Series being organized by the Department of Economics, UWI, Mona to highlight various social and economic Caribbean issues of public interest. His lecture entitled "Prospects for Economic Union in the Caribbean" is scheduled for Monday, November 3, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre (SSLT), Mona Campus.
The Lecture Series is being staged under the aegis of the Department of Economics, UWI, Mona.
“Beyond Language Boundaries: Oral Traditions Across the Caribbean”
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, UWI, Mona and the Alliance Française present Celebrating Reading / Lire En Fête / Celebrando La Lectura under the theme: “Beyond Language Boundaries: Oral Traditions Across the Caribbean” on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at 2:30 pm in N3. The panelists include: Jean Small (Guyana), Amalia Liu (Colombia), Hector Poulet (Martinique), and Amina Blackwood-Meeks (Jamaica).
Elsa Leo Rhynie Symposium
The Centre for Gender and Development Studies (CGDS) hosts the Elsa Leo-Rhynie Symposium and 15th Anniversary Celebrations of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies on November 9-11, 2008 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The Symposium is being held under the theme Gender Perspectives in Education: Caribbean Impact Global Reach.
Sickle Cell Conference
Sickle Cell is the commonest genetic disorder seen in Jamaica. In keeping with the mandate of the Sickle Cell Unit (SCU) to improve the lives of individuals affected by sickle cell disease through research, education and clinical care the SCU of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute at UWI hosts a conference under the theme "Managing Sickle Cell Disease: The Chronic Care Model" on October 30-31, 2008. The Conference is designed to share knowledge about the disease in order to improve the care and treatment of persons affected by sickle cell.
World of Work Seminar Series-Resume Writing and Interviewing
The World of Work Seminar Series designed to provide career planning and preparation advice to UWI students will host two seminars on Cover Letter, Resume Writing and Interviewing Techniques. The seminar are being held on Thursday, October 30, 2008 starting at 2 pm and 3:30 pm respectively at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre. The upcoming seminar addresses the topic ”Entrepreneurship the Way Forward” on November 4, 2008 at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre.
Documentary Screening: “Time and Judgment”
The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts the final cultural event in its series of events for the month of October to commemorate some of Jamaica’s significant historical events. The final event is the documentary screening of the film “Time and Judgment” taking place on Friday, October 31, 2008 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1).
Public Lecture -The Evangelical Enterprise of Black West Indian Missionaries in Southern Nigeria
Professor Waibinte Wariboko, Head of the Department of History, UWI, Mona will deliver a public lecture entitled "The Evangelical Enterprise of Black West Indian Missionaries in Southern Nigeria, 1895 – 1925." The Lecture is scheduled for Tuesday October 28, 2008 at 6 pm in the Multifunctional Room, UWI Main Library.
The university community and the public are invited to attend.
WOW Launch Panel Discussion
The World of Work Seminar Launch which takes the form of a Panel Discussion takes place on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 2:45 pm at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre. The Launch is a collaboration among the University of the West Indies, Mona, the US Embassy and the Jamaica Fulbright-Humphrey Alumni Association.
UWI, Mona Kicks Off Staff Sports Day, October 25
The University of the West Indies, Mona kicks off its first staff Sports Day on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at the Mona Bowl. The day’s activities seek to engage all staff members through six main events namely: dominoes, cricket, football (six a side), netball, table tennis and novelty events. All staff members and their families are invited to participate in the activities. A special Kiddies Corner will be accommodated to entertain and engage the children. The Sports Day is preceded by an Opening Ceremony on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 5 pm at the Mona Bowl.

As a way of highlighting the significance of Jamaica’s culture and heritage The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts a series of activities in October, the month in which National Heroes’ Day is observed. The events are aimed at commemorating some of Jamaica’s significant historical events. One such event is the second documentary screening taking place on Friday, October 24, 2008 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona. This week’s documentary is entitled “Miss Dynamite goes in Search of Nanny of the Maroons”.
