Family Business Governance Workshop

The Mona School of Business (MSB) at UWI, in collaboration with the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC) will host a Family Business Governance workshop on October 9-11, 2008 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge, UWI, Mona.  The main presenters are Professor Gaia Marchisio from Kennesaw State University and family business advisor, Annette Rahael.  There will also be a presentation by Dr. Lawrence Nicholson, lecturer, Mona School of Business, UWI, Mona. 

The Edward Baugh Distinguished Lecture Series

The Department of Literatures in English will host the second lecture in The Edward Baugh Distinguished Lecture Series on Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 11:00 am, at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona.  The guest speaker will be Professor Emeritus Mark McWatt, award-winning author.  He has published two collections of poetry, the second of which, The Language of Eldorado (1994), was awarded the Guyana Prize.  His first work of prose fiction, Suspended Sentences (2005), was the winner of a Commonwealth Writers' Prize in 2006.

Health Centre Improvements on the Way

At the recently held inaugural University Health Centre Open Day and Health Fair Dr. Blossom Anglin-Brown, Clinical Director, UWI Health Centre unveiled new initiatives of the Health Centre to be launched on a phased basis. These initiatives are designed to improve the efficiency of the range of services offered.

Dream the Impossible Dream

The Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences in conjunction with the Institute of Jamaica has organized a public lecture titled “Dream the Impossible Dream:  My Journey to the Stars “. The lecture takes place on Monday, October 13 2008 at 6 pm at the Inter Faculty Lecture theatre.  Professor Mercedes Richards will deliver the lecture. She is the first astronomer in the world to make clear images of the gravitational flow of gas between stars in any interacting binary pair. Professor Richards is the current Chair of the Nominating Committee of the American Astronomical Society.

Seretse Small to Serenade at Lunch Hour Concert

The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts continues its weekly lunch hour concert on Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 1:00 pm with Seretse Small. UWI students and staff are invited to unwind to the thrilling sounds of Jazz and Folk music.  Performances will also be done by other musicians and dancers. 

Admission is free.

Distinguished Lecture and Book Launch

The University of the West Indies hosts the Distinguished Professorial Guest Lecture titled “Global Update: HIV/AIDS in Pregnant Women and in Children”. The lecture will be delivered by Professor Sten H. Vermund, Amos Christie Chair in Global Health, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, USA on Friday, October 3, 2008 at 5 pm at the Main Medical Theatre, located at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Mona.

UWI Health Centre Open Day

The University Health Centre in an effort to continually educate, inform and cater to the needs of the UWI community will host an Open Day on Thursday, October 2, 2008 starting at 9 am at the Health Centre Visitors’ Parking Lot. The Open day activities will commence with a brief opening ceremony followed by rap sessions discussing sexual health, nutrition, psychological health among other topics.

Also available are FREE blood pressure checks, height and weight checks and other tests such as HIV Rapid Test at a minimal cost.

UWI/Guardian Life Premium Teaching Award

The University of the West Indies, Mona in collaboration with Guardian Life Limited hosts the UWI/ Guardian Life Premium Teaching Award 2008 on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 6 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre.

Celebrating the Creativity of UWI Staff and Students

An exhibition featuring the works of staff and students of The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona is now on at the Administrative Annex to the Senate Building. The exhibition is the third in the series mounted by the UWI 60 Mona Planning Committee and will run to the end of October 2008.
