“Gender, Sexuality and Wellness”
The Jamaica Psychiatric Association will host its annual conference on Sunday, August 19 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. The Conference theme is “Gender, Sexuality and Wellness.” Professor of Literary and Cultural Studies, UWI, Mona, Professor Carolyn Cooper will give the keynote address.
Bachelor of Arts in Entertainment and Cultural Enterprise Management
The Reggae Studies Unit, University of the West Indies, Mona invites applications for the Bachelor of Arts in Entertainment and Cultural Enterprise Management for the 2007/8 academic year. A major or minor may be pursued from among the sectors of focus, which include: digital technology, music, performing arts, fashion industry, festival and event production
CARIMAC And UNESCO To Offer Online Media Courses
Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) will for the first time offer three of its courses online through a partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC). The courses to be offered are Community Media, Online Journalism and Information/Media Literacy. The courses in Community Media and Online Journalism will begin in September 2007.
Freedom Delayed
The Jamaica National Bicentenary Committee will host the Launch of Freedom Delayed: an Exhibition on the Trans Atlantic Trade in Africans on Saturday, July 28 starting at 10 am in the Sovereign Centre. The event will be opened by Zahra Redwood, Miss Jamaica Universe 2007.
HURRICANE TIPS
The Hurricane season runs from June and continues until November; thus far it has proven active. Here are a few tips on what to do during a hurricane.
• Stay calm, and be alert during the hurricane.
• Do not go outside during the hurricane, unless it is absolutely necessary. Flying objects may hit you and can cause serious injury or loss of life.
• Keep your radios on and listen for the latest information and bulletins.
• Ensure that your refrigerated food items are used up in order to avoid spoilage.

The Electronics Unit, in its effort to maintain UWI’s thrust for improved innovation and research, has made remarkable progress in creating newly enhanced and useful devices for improved living.
Mona Academic Conference
March 2007 was the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade. To mark this important event in our history, the Mona campus of the UWI will devote its Academic Conference 2007 to an examination of the meaning of this event for us and for humanity.
Panfest 2007
The UWI Panoridim Steel Orchestra will present Panfest 2007: 30 years of Jammin! from July 27-29, at the Courtleigh Auditorium (formerly the Island life Auditorium). The show times are Friday and Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 4 pm and 8 pm. Tickets are on sale at J$800 and J$650 for UWI students. Special 30th Anniversary memorabilia will be on sale as well. Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence Announced
Five members of the UWI academic staff will on October 24, receive the coveted Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence for academic year 2006/2007, during a special ceremony at the Cave Hill Campus. Dr Tomlin J. Paul, Lecturer in the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry, Mona and Dr John Campbell, Lecturer in the Department of History at the St Augustine Campus will receive the Award for excellence in teaching, while for outstanding accomplishments in research the awardees will be Professor Susan P.
UWI 60th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
The University of the West Indies will celebrate the 60th anniversary of its founding in 2008. Various commemorative events and activities on each campus and in the UWI-12 countries are scheduled throughout the anniversary year, from January 1 to December 31, 2008. The climax of these celebrations will be a Special Convocation Week from July 12 – 20, 2008 at the oldest campus – the Mona Campus – when it is hoped that hundreds of our graduates will assemble at Mona for a grand Gathering of Graduates.
