ARCHBISHOP OF YORK TO BE HONOURED AT SPECIAL CONVOCATION AT THE UWI
The Most Reverend, the Right Honourable Dr. John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, is to be conferred with the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws at a Special Convocation to be held in the Assembly Hall at the Mona Campus on Saturday, October 6 beginning at 10:00 a.m.
BICENTENARY CONFERENCE
The Society for Caribbean Research (SOCARE) in association with the Jamaica National Bicentenary Committee will hold a Bicentenary Conference from December 5-8, 2007 at the Half Moon Golf and Spa Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The Conference is being held under the theme Discourses of Resistance: Culture, Identity, Freedom and Reconciliation.
BOOKSHOP REOPENS
The University Bookshop has reopened for business as at July 13 at the Old Personnel Building, 4 Gibraltar Camp Way - adjacent the UWI (Mona) and Community Cooperative Credit Union. The opening hours remain Monday - Friday 8:30 am to 6:00 pm.
Saturday operations have been suspended during the summer holiday until August 25
Condolences - Audrey Chambers
The University of the West Indies is deeply saddened at the passing of Mrs. Audrey Chambers, Senior Librarian, Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), on Thursday July 5 and extends condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.
Condolences - Campbell “Fosh” Barrow
The University of the West Indies community mourns the passing of Mr. Campbell “Fosh” Barrow, on Saturday, July 7. He was Industrial Relations Consultant to the Mona Campus since 1998. The UWI community extends condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Barrow. The Thanksgiving Service for his life will take place on Wednesday, July 18 at the University Chapel, Mona beginning at 3 pm.
Condolences - Fitzroy Baptiste
The University of the West Indies community mourns the passing of Dr. Fitzroy Baptiste on Saturday, July 7 and extends condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. Dr. Baptiste had a long, varied and distinguished academic career at the UWI, starting with his first appointment in October 1968 as Assistant Lecturer in Afro-Asian Studies (as it was then called) in the Department of Sociology and Politics at the St. Augustine Campus and continuing after his formal retirement in August 2001.

In order to remain safe during the Hurricane Season you need to be prepared. You should organize a survival kit and periodically check it to ensure items have not expired. Your survival kit should include:
• Radio (battery-powered)
• Flashlight(s)
• Batteries
• Can opener
• Matches or lighter
• Two-week food-drink supply
• Prescription medicines (a month’s supply)
• Baby diapers and incontinent pads (if applicable)
• First-aid kit
• Spare keys to home and vehicles
• Tools (hammer, screw driver, pliers, and nails)
• Toiletries
MEDICAL SCIENCES ANNUAL RESEARCH CONFERENCE
The Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI, Mona will host its 16th Annual Research Conference from November 14-16 at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre. Abstracts are invited for oral and poster presentations at the Conference. The deadline for submission is Tuesday, July 31 by e-mail at fmsarc@uwimona.edu.jm. During the conference several Prizes will be presented by various associations and for the oral and poster presentations.
PAN AFRICAN SUMMIT
A Pan African Summit led by veterans in the movement is being held in Jamaica from Sunday, July 15 to Wednesday, July 18. The Summit opened at Liberty Hall on Sunday, July 15 at 10 am with the formal opening beginning at 12 noon. The Opening Ceremony was preceded by cultural presentations and tours of the Liberty Hall Museum. At the ceremony there were addresses delivered by Dr.
SUBSTANCE ABUSE WORKSHOP
The Department of Community Health and Psychiatry, UWI, Mona in association with the National Council on Drug Abuse (NCDA) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will hold a Substance Abuse Workshop from July 23-27. The workshop is scheduled to take place between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm daily at the Sybil Francis Seminar Room at the Social Welfare Training Centre, UWI, Mona. Topics being covered in the workshop include: Fundamental Concepts in Substance Abuse, Substance Abuse and HIV/AIDS, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Treatment of Nicotine Dependence.
