Call for Paper- 9th Annual SALISES Conference
Papers are invited for the 9th Annual Conference of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) to be held under the theme: “Reinventing the Political Economy Tradition of the Caribbean.” The Conference is in honour of Norman Girvan and is scheduled to take place on March 26–28, 2008. Through the Conference SALISES proposes to take the work of Norman Girvan and his generation of intellectual thinkers as a point of departure for rethinking the political economy of the Caribbean.
CANQATE 4th Annual Conference
The Caribbean Network for Quality Assurance in Tertiary Education (CANQATE) 4th Annual Conference will be hosted by the University Council of Jamaica under the theme “Transforming Tertiary Education to Meet Global Challenges.” This Conference takes place from October 9-11 at the Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort and Spa.
CARIMAC AND UNESCO TO OFFER ONLINE MEDIA COURSES
Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) will for the first time offer three of its courses online through a partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC). The courses to be offered are Community Media, Online Journalism and Information/Media Literacy. The courses in Community Media and Online Journalism will begin in September 2007.
Hurricane Tips
In order to remain safe during the Hurricane Season you need to be prepared. Here are some tips for you to observe.
Ensure that you have on hand simple first aid supplies which should include: band aids, drinking water to serve at least a few days and special medication.
Make sure you have material for battening up doors and windows.
See that galvanized sheeting on your roofs, out-buildings and fences are securely fastened.
Panfest 2007
The UWI Panoridim Steel Orchestra will present Panfest 2007: 30 years of Jammin! from July 27-29, at the Courtleigh Auditorium (formerly the Island life Auditorium). The show times are Friday and Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 4 pm and 8 pm. Tickets are on sale at $800 and $650 for UWI students. Special 30th Anniversary memorabilia will be on sale. UWI SPONSORS JAMAICAN REPRESENTATIVE TO UNESCO ETHICS MEETING
Manager of the Office of Sponsored Research, UWI, Mona and Attorney-At-Law Cheryl Brown will be the Jamaican representative at the 5th annual meeting of the Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee (IGBC) of UNESCO, making Jamaica the first English Speaking Caribbean country to have a representative at any IGBC meeting. Ms. Brown has been invited to attend this meeting as an observer from July 19-20 in Paris by the Director General of the Jamaica National Commission for UNESCO.
UWI, Electronic Unit Update
In keeping with the UWI’s community outreach activities, a team from the Electronics Unit completed the repair of an ultrasound machine which was urgently needed to serve the community of Morant Bay. The machine is one of the two, owned by the only radiology imaging service in the parish of St. Thomas and which also serves patients of the Princess Margaret Hospital as well as patients from several communities in Portland.
“GENDER, SEXUALITY AND WELLNESS”
The Jamaica Psychiatric Association will host its annual conference under the theme “Gender, Sexuality and Wellness. The Conference takes place at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Sunday, August 19. The keynote address will be given by Professor of Literary and Cultural Studies, UWI, Mona, Professor Carolyn Cooper.
