Mona GeoInformaticS (MonaGIS) is offering Introductory and Advanced GIS training courses at the Mona Informatix Ltd. facility at UWI, Mona. Classes will be held between September 3 and October 9. The introductory module includes topics on: Cartography, Manipulating Data, Project Application, Introduction to ArcView GIS and GPS Mapping.

Mona Academic Conference
The Mona Academic Conference 2007 is scheduled to take place from Friday, August 31 to Sunday, September 2 under the theme “Freedom: Retrospective and Prospective.” The Conference officially begins with an Opening Ceremony on Friday, August 31 at 6:00 pm at the Undercroft, UWI Mona. The keynote address will be delivered by Professor Ruth Simmons, President of Brown’s University

The Jamaica Psychiatric Association will host its annual conference under the theme “Gender, Sexuality and Wellness. The Conference takes place at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Sunday, August 19 at 8:30 am. The keynote address will be given by Professor of Literary and Cultural Studies, UWI, Mona, Professor Carolyn Cooper.

Call For Papers - 9th Annual SALISES Conference
Papers are invited for the 9th Annual Conference of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) to be held under the theme: “Reinventing the Political Economy Tradition of the Caribbean.” The Conference is in honour of Norman Girvan and is scheduled to take place on March 26–28, 2008. Through the Conference SALISES proposes to take the work of Norman Girvan and his generation of intellectual thinkers as a point of departure for rethinking the political economy of the Caribbean.
HURRICANE TIPS
In order to remain safe during the Hurricane Season you need to be prepared. You should organize a survival kit and periodically check it to ensure items have not expired. Your survival kit should include:
• Radio (battery-powered)
• Flashlight(s)
• Batteries
• Can opener
• Matches or lighter
• Two-week food-drink supply
• Prescription medicines (a month’s supply)
• Baby diapers and incontinent pads (if applicable)
• First-aid kit
• Spare keys to home and vehicles
• Tools (hammer, screw driver, pliers, and nails)
• Toiletries

Mona Academic Conference
March 2007 was the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade. To mark this important event in our history, the Mona campus of the UWI will devote its Academic Conference 2007 to an examination of the meaning of this even for us and for humanity.
UWI/Guardian Life Premium Teaching Lecture
The University of the West Indies, Mona through the Instructional Development Unit (IDU) and Guardian Life Limited will host the second Premium Teaching Lecture on Thursday, October 4 at 6:00 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Joy Mighty. This biennial event which alternates with the Premium Teaching Award is designed to reflect 21st century trends in teaching and learning and enhance the quality of teaching at UWI.
