RNAO Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO)

BPSO LogoIn April of 2018, The UWI School of Nursing, Mona (UWISON) made history at the 93rd Annual General Meeting of Canada’s Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario by becoming the first institution in the Caribbean to be designated a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO).  BPSOs are health-care and academic organizations selected by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) to implement and evaluate the RNAO's best practice guidelines.  It is a dynamic partnership that focuses on making a positive impact on patient care through evidence-based practice.

Best practice guidelines which address pressure injuries, falls and fall injuries, person and family centered care and professionalism in nursing were implemented throughout the undergraduate and graduate nursing curriculum during the School’s three-year candidacy period.  The post designation period had further integration of guidelines, facilitating client centered learning and breastfeeding and this research based emphasis bolstered the nursing curriculum.  Through this BPSO initiative the school has been able to train over 300 student champions in the use of evidence-based practice to improve patient care outcomes in the clinical setting. The University Hospital of the West Indies also received BPSO designation in 2019 and has partnered with the RNAO to integrate many of the same guidelines in their clinical nursing care.  The BPSO steering committee is grateful to the dedicated team of lecturers and clinical instructors who continue to support their teaching and learning activities with the best available evidence.
