OVERVIEW: The event presents a fun and educational opportunity for students to create maps and simulate reducing disaster risks and addressing public health crises. The activities will introduce and provide hands on experience for students in GIS Technology, Cartology and Geography and will expose them to career options in the Geosciences.
PARTICIPANT CAPACITY: 25 Persons per session

INSTITUTE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND SECURITY
TOPIC: The Dudus Effect: The Decline in Serious Crimes 2010- 2014
OVERVIEW: The lecture provides an analytic description and explanation for the 2012-2014 decline in Jamaica’s homicide rate. It is argued that this decline was triggered by the extradition of Jamaica’s most powerful street criminal together with disruptions in standard policing. The presentation presents the case for applying targeted law enforcement strategies to achieve significant short-term results and underlines the institutional factors and criminal justice reforms critical to controlling violent crime.
PRESENTER: Anthony Harriott, Leading Criminologist and Professor of Political Sociology and Director of the Institute of Criminal Justice & Security.

TOPIC: From Retributive to Restorative Justice and Practices.
OVERVIEW: Jamaica and the United States both have deeply-rooted cultures that support retributive justice models, which largely focus on incarceration as a major tool for rectifying criminal behavior. Both countries have evaluated and concluded that incarceration, and the stigmatization and the consequences that flow from it, are not effective methods for addressing crime and are consequently instituting large scale changes to their respective systems. This panel will explore some of those changes.
