INSTITUTE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND SECURITY
TOPIC: The Dudus Effect: The Decline in Serious Crimes 2010- 2014
OVERVIEW: The lecture provides an analytic description and explanation for the 2012-2014 decline in Jamaica’s homicide rate. It is argued that this decline was triggered by the extradition of Jamaica’s most powerful street criminal together with disruptions in standard policing. The presentation presents the case for applying targeted law enforcement strategies to achieve significant short-term results and underlines the institutional factors and criminal justice reforms critical to controlling violent crime.
PRESENTER: Anthony Harriott, Leading Criminologist and Professor of Political Sociology and Director of the Institute of Criminal Justice & Security.
