Perhaps it is in response to certain demands of new examinations systems, or increasing shortage of teaching facilities formerly considered basic, or it may be the birth of a new student population better prepared by exposure through the various media of communication-perhaps it is one, all, or none of these that is responsible for the clear tendency of fairly recent textbooks to consider student use (as against teacher use) their target. This does not, of course, limit the value of such books as classroom texts-in fact the intention seems to be to equip the student with the means of helping himself with considerable ease, thus reducing the burden on the teacher and school resources, although no doubt recognizing that were good teaching and suitable equipment also exist the learning experience becomes correspondingly richer, more meaningful and successful
