Abstract:

In Caribbean nations such as Jamaica, the issue of antisocial and violent behaviour in schools is an increasing source of concern and a critical challenge. Given the seriousness of the problem, the purpose of this paper is to highlight the Change from Within programme, an intervention to address violence and anti-social behaviours within Jamaican schools, and one whose methodology supports leadership development amongst all school stakeholders. The role of leadership in shaping school culture is widely acknowledged. Drawing on past and present initiatives of the Change from Within programme, including efforts to foster a circle of support with other schools, training for school leaders and teachers in innovative conflict resolution strategies and teaching methodologies, and mentorship for students, this paper uses anecdotal evidence and qualitative feedback to highlight how these elements can serve to build capacity and leadership for various levels of school stakeholders, including principals, teachers, and students, and, by extension, empower these individuals to drive school cultural change that supports peace and sustainability.
