Abstract:

A research report on this project was published by the Medical Learning Resources Unit (MLRU) of the University of the West Indies in May 1984. It described a project based on ten 15-minute radio programmes transmitted weekly by the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation between October and December 1982. The goal was an evaluation of the feasibility and effectiveness of radio with support print materials as a vehicle for continuing education of primary health care workers in rural Jamaica. Administration of the project, which was funded through the World Bank Jamaica Population Project, Phase 11, and the Jamaican Ministry of Health, was based at the MLRU. Specific consultants responsible for each topic were recruited from the University and the Ministry of Health. Topics were carefully chosen so that they related to day-to-day experiences of the rural primary health care team, but excluded areas addressed in recent Ministry educational programmes.
