Abstract:

This small book (sixty-nine 4½”/6½” pages of author’s text, average typesetting) contains five short papers of Hesseling’s originally published between 1897 and 1933. The selections cover seven/eight contact-situation languages (viz., Afrikaans, Malayo-Portuguese, Indo-Dutch, Canadian French/Acadian, Louisiana French-based creole, Papiamentu and Negerhollands) chosen from three continents (Africa, Asia and the Americas) for the purpose of demonstrating some of the socio-historical factors which have determined the current form of Afrikaans in South Africa, and its survival.
