Abstract:

Teaching mathematics successfully is a rare phenomenon in our schools, particularly in our primary schools where most of the teachers feel inadequate for the task. Many of them are aware of their limitations and would very much like to have some guidance as to how to do a better job. Most of the books on the pedagogy of mathematics seem to them to deal with ideal situations not applicable to their classes, or to reflect a theoretical viewpoint which is unrelated to the realities of the everyday classroom. No wonder these teachers leave such books on the library shelves of their colleges, failing to consult them as students or purchase them for reference as practitioners!
