Abstract:

Recognition of the need for a theoretical basis for foreign language courses designed to impart a reading knowledge only (generally a specialised reading knowledge) of these languages has been retarded by a certain degree of reluctance to admit that such a basis was possible at all. "Modern" linguistic ideas of the pedagogical priority of the spoken language in general foreign language teaching were easily confused, even by experts, with the unfounded idea of its necessary priority in any language teaching process, however limited.
