Abstract:

The articles which form part of this special issue of the Caribbean Journal of Education are the proceedings of a Staff Research Day of the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, held in the summer of 2015. At this event, members of all three sections of the Department presented the findings of research which they were conducting at the time. The diversity of the research interests in the Department is reflected in these articles, ranging from aspects of the acquisition of English by Jamaican children, to the adult learning of writing, work-place related issues with regard to speech and writing, and aspects of the philosophy of Bob Marley’s music. In keeping with the aim of the journal, then, the articles address issues in education that affect Caribbean peoples, whether within the region or in the diaspora, and are expected to stimulate thought and discussion around these issues.
