Abstract:

There have been numerous debates on the effectiveness of the education system in fostering the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes for active democratic citizens. This qualitative study investigated the views of secondary students in Jamaica on their perceptions of democracy, democratic citizenship, and citizenship education. The study also explored how the students viewed the state of democracy in their country and how their education has prepared them for their role as active democratic citizens. The sample was purposively selected and consisted of twelve grade eleven students who were interviewed through focus group interviews. The findings revealed that the students’ concept of democracy was based on political literacy including knowledge of democracy as a form of government and that democratic citizenship was related to the rights and responsibilities of citizens. Preparation for citizenship at school was effected mainly through school governance and the informal curriculum such as clubs and societies.
