Abstract:

There needs to be a balance between a child-centred and teacher-directed approach in education, where the learner is seen as a candle to be lit rather than a container to be filled.

In early childhood education music can become the flame that lights the candle. For although the main aim of music education is to develop musical understanding and inventiveness, becoming responsive to musical sound can open the way to increasing our awareness and knowledge about the world around us. In learning music a wide spectrum of “incidental learnings” takes place. In this article we point to the importance and usefulness of these learnings for the young child, and examine how a child's well-being and total development can be aided by incorporating musical activities into the school day.
