I am glad to have the opportunity to respond to the review article on Comparative AfroAmerican (CJE, 8:1 (1981), pp. 102-118). The title of the book is not a "misnomer" for not dealing with all AfroAmerican dialects. Neither is a Comparative Bantu which fails to deal with all Bantu languages nor a Comparative Romance which fails to include the important Rheto-Romansch dialects or Catalan etc. In any case, the subtitle of the book (An Historical-Comparative Study of English-based AfroAmerican Dialects of the New World), which the reviewer fails to mention, clearly indicates the restricted scope of the book.
