Islam like many of the major religions of the world emerged in the East. Its followers, the Muslims, are today disseminated throughout the world. Adherents of the faith form the majority of the population in several countries. Elsewhere they are established communities of varying sizes. In all, Muslims form no less than one sixth of the world population.
