Abstract:

A Brief Historical Sketch

Teachers’ colleges, along with theological colleges, are the oldest tertiary institutions in the Caribbean. Theological colleges hold pride of place in that they were the first tertiary institutions established in the region followed by teachers’ colleges, originally called normal schools. The Moravian Normal School for training Brown ladies, established in 1831, was actually the first teachers’ college to be founded in the Caribbean. However, its existence was short-lived, closing in 1839. Mico Teachers’ College established in 1836 is the oldest college in existence in the region and among the oldest in the hemisphere.
