Research carried out in Jamaica in field in the field of teacher education has been concerned with four major areas:

1. The selection of candidates in teacher education
2. Evaluation of innovation in teacher education
3. The impact of personal and college variables on teacher trainees
4. An experiment in individualised instruction.

1. Selection of candidates for training

In 1953, Phillips examined means whereby students could be selected for entry into teacher training colleges, and used a British sample as well as a Jamaican one. Performance scores on 3 tests — Intelligence, English and a Personality Inventory were correlated with teaching ability. The conclusions drawn were:
 

1. Neither the Intelligence nor English test would be particularly useful as selection instruments in Britain, but both would be useful in Jamaica.
2. The personality test proved useful for both samples and could probably be of value in both countries.
