The University of the West Indies (UWI) was established 1948 as the University College of the West Indies (UCWI) to serve the then British colonies of Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, British Guy ana (now Guyana), British Honduras (now Belize), the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Introduction and Purpose 

Given the current thrust in education across the Caribbean today and considering the strain which is being put on our limited resources to sustain and increase this thrust, it is incumbent on all concerned to strive to ensure that the greatest value accrues to the greatest possible number. The nations of the region cannot afford to commit manpower, money and other resources to education, and yet remain complacent over high degrees of failure or be satisfied with mediocre performances in their schools.
