This book is the second in a series of five on Understanding Geography, and takes as its central theme the interaction between man and his environment. The book is divided into 9 chapters. The first chapter deals with the earth’s position and movements in space, and examines the factors which influence the earth’s climate. Chapter two traces the evolution of man from his ape-like ancestors to modern man, and the distribution of people in the world.

This new book is attractively presented, clearly written, and well illustrated with photographs, maps, diagrams, charts and tables. The text is divided into three parts, each with three chapters. Part One, entitled ‘Perspectives on Food’, begins by outlining the different types of foods in different parts of the world and the importance of each type, then examines the physical, economic and social factors which influence food production. It ends with an examination of the distribution of world food resources in relation to population.
