UWI Mona Beats Rockfort in Jackie Bell Knockout

The Pelicans from the University of the West Indies has done it again, this time, in the Jackie Bell Knock-out Competition when they left Rockford shivering with concerns with a 1-0 thrashing at the UWI Mona Bowl on Tuesday, September 7th. The grand Jackie Bell Knock-Out Tournament commenced today with competitions from several different teams including UWI and Rockfort. Neville Bell the son of Jackie Bell said that this year his aim is to lead his team to a clear win in the tournament. The match was off to an early start at approximately 3:35 pm and though much energy was shown on the field scoring appeared difficult for both teams. Many attempts were made by the Rockfort team but sharp goal keeping skills exhibited by Kristopher Lewis of Mona kept the opponents at bay.

The tussle between the teams continued and up to 4:25pm when the half time whistle went the score was still locked at 0-0. Ten 10 minutes into the second half of the game Mikhail Hewitt replaced Andre Bernal to rapturous applause from the crowd. Few minutes in the match Hewitt made an excellent attempt at the Rockfort’s goal but his effort was saved by the goal keeper. At approximately seventy minutes into the game Aja Aiken wearing the #9 jersey brought a spectacular twist to the match when he made a fantastic header from a corner kick finding the back of the Rockfort’s net scoring the first and deciding goal of the match. The crowd went into frenzy, anticipating more goals as they celebrated.

The match official made a number of bookings issuing 1 red and 2 yellow card to Rockfort while UWI picked up 1 yellow card. In describing the game Kristopher Lewis the goal keeper for UWI Mona noted ‘It was a hard game. The team played a good match but not their best [however] the most important thing is that we won the game.’ As the team reviewed some of their mistakes Mikhail Hewitt described the match as ‘crappy game due to the fact that it was the first match but the guys pulled it off at the end.’
