Four UWI scholarship athletes were chosen to represent Jamaica in International Competitions in Track & Field and Football.

Andrae Bernal, a 2nd year Pure & Applied student was drafted into the Jamaica U-23 team for the Football Olympics. Bernal helped the UWI Mona team to win the 2009 KSAFA Major League Competition and was named the top goal scorer for that competition. The 2nd year scholarship student was called to the national program for the first time since playing Football on a competitive level. He along with the team are currently in Surname contesting the first round of qualifiers.

First year student Jason Young and 2nd year student Hansle Parchment, represented Jamaica at the CAC Games. Young and Parchment were a part of the winning 4x100m relay team that won the event at the CAC Games. Young was also placed third in the finals of the 200m while fellow teammate ,Parchment made the finals of the 110m hurdles, but failed to finish haven been disqualified. Both athletes will be participating in their pet events at the World University Games along with 1st year scholarship athlete Jowayne Hibbert  who will be contesting the 800m.

The University Games will be held in Shenzhen, China from August 12-23 and UWI Sports Coordinator Rashid Hall is appointed as the team manager and UWI Massage Therapist/Jumps Coach Kerry Lee Ricketts will be the team masseuse. This means that UWI has 27% of the Jamaica Contingent to the games. The University congratulates these athletes and staff administrators and wishes them all the best in their endeavours.
