The University of the West Indies, Mona – Western Jamaica Campus (WJC) is located in the dynamic city of Montego Bay, Jamaica. The campus was established in 2008 as a direct response to the increasing demand for access to quality higher educational opportunities across the western region of the country.
The UWI Mona WJC offers academic programmes from the Faculties of Humanities and Education, Medical Sciences, Science and Technology and Social Sciences. Academic programming at the campus is aligned with the aspirations of the people and the demands of critical growth industries in the region.
The internationally accredited Mona School of Business and Management leads the Faculty of Social Sciences presence with both graduate and undergraduate programmes along with the Departments of Economics, Government and Psychology, Sociology and Social Work. The Caribbean School of Media and Communication offers undergraduate programmes in Integrated Marketing Communication and Digital Media Production, while the Department of Computing offers Information Technology. The UWI School of Nursing (UWISON) continues its tradition of excellence in nursing education at the Western Jamaica Campus.
All programmes are strengthened by courses and minors from the Departments of Modern Languages and Language, Linguistics and Philosophy as well as the Institutes of Caribbean Studies and Gender and Development Studies.
Since its establishment in 2008, the UWI Mona WJC has endeavoured to build partnerships at both the corporate and community levels, across the civic, public and educational sectors, and with industries that positively impact life in the city of Montego Bay and the wider Western region. We are therefore active members of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry as well as the Global Services Association of Jamaica, and provide leadership and direction on the Boards of several community-based organizations, educational institutions, and public health bodies, including the newly established Monsignor Gladstone Wilson College for Boys, the Mayor's Advisory Council, and the Western Regional Health Authority.
While access to higher education for the parishes of St Ann, Trelawny, St James, Hanover and Westmoreland is a priority, the student population at WJC is however drawn from all parts of Jamaica and the Caribbean. International students are also welcomed to study in the city of Montego Bay.
The Office of Student Services offers strong developmental programming for our students including mentorship, leadership, entrepreneurship, community outreach and cultural and creative competencies. Student Services also include housing and accommodation.
Our student leaders have gone on to make a mark on local and world stages. For example, the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Lasco-NAJ Nursing Student of the Year all hailed from the UWI School of Nursing at WJC. Our performances in digital media design and production competitions are consistently top ranked, and our debaters have become standard bearers of debating excellence in the world debating championships.
The WJC has produced three valedictorians at the Mona graduation ceremonies in the last six years, several recipients of coveted scholarships to graduate programmes locally and internationally. The campus has also led critical research in crime, culture, governance, and mental health as well as public lectures, seminars and symposia in higher education, mental wellness, tourism linkages, sustainable cities, and media.
These are but a few examples of the high standards set and met by our faculty and support staff and are reflective of the quality higher education experience that is the sacred promise of UWI Mona-Western Jamaica Campus
This is UWI Mona- WJC, a light rising from the West.
