The Biotechnology Centre has five research labs that specialize in different areas of research, ranging from medicinal plants to molecular biology/virology.
There are two molecular labs that looks at plants pathogens and diseases, isolation & identification. Both molecular labs are equipped with PCR machines, Gel Doc Systems, DNA hybridizer, Centrifuge, Speed-voc and other machines that are used in the sequencing of viruses (plants and HIV) HIV- Drug Resistance.
In addition the Centre has a Tissue Culture lab with a Growth Room which facilitates research in this area. The Tuber Crops lab supplies an oven, pH meter, Balances, Laminar flow and Cleanhoods.
Our 7 faculties and 12 professional schools offer more than 200 programmes to some 18,000 graduate, undergraduate and continuing studies students.
The UWI, Mona ranks first in Jamaica among accredited tertiary-level programmes. In 2012, the University was again one of Jamaica’s Top 100 Employers.
