Support to our Faculty and Staff Impacted by Hurricane Melissa

06 November, 2025

With the passage of Hurricane Melissa and its widespread and devastating impact on our country, the Mona Campus Management team is cognizant that many of our faculty and staff are affected in a personal way. We are using this opportunity to reassure you that we are standing with you, even as we thank you for joining wholeheartedly in the effort to restore the campus to normalcy while supporting our students. We are particularly concerned about our staff members residing in Western Jamaica.

The Senior Management Team on Sunday, November 2, 2025 journeyed to the Montego Bay Jamaica Campus and distributed food items and other critical supplies to our staff at the Western Jamaica Campus (WJC). Our Director of the WJC with the support of the Jamaica Defence Force, has been traversing those areas in Western Jamaica which are accessible, in order to locate and provide support to staff.

The Mona Management Team has now finalized a comprehensive response to the hurricane which rests on four (4) pillars. Specifically, in relation to our faculty and staff, I wish to highlight the following initiatives:

  1. UWI Cares, under which funding and critical supplies are being solicited and received at a central location on campus and will be dispatched to affected staff and the wider Jamaica on a bi-weekly basis and into the medium term.
  2. Staff Solidarity – under which a fund of Fifteen Million Dollars ($15M) has been established to provide grants to staff, particularly those from Western Jamaica Campus, whose primary residence has been severely impacted by the hurricane.

A dedicated Website will be launched shortly detailing these four (4) pillars with information as to how staff and faculty can access these resources. Additionally, we are asking our staff and faculty to avail themselves of the counselling services at the University Health Centre, as well as our chaplaincy service.

Please reach out to the Employee Success Division (formerly Human Resource Management Division) if there is any other support that you may require. The Campus Management stands with you at this time as we strive to build back better.
