Education-Based (B.Ed.)

 

Three Years (without Teacher Training) Full-Time

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C), including English Language AND two double Units CAPE subjects or 2 GCE A-Level subjects in relevant area

Two Years (with Teacher Training) Full-Time

Faculty Of Medical Sciences

Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S.) / Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.)

 

Five years Full-Time (applicants must be at least 18 years old in year of admission)

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Levels/ BGCSE (Grades A-C) in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics AND
    Three double Units CAPE subjects or 3 A- Level subjects including Chemistry, Biology and any other subject.

NOTE: Physics and Mathematics are compulsory at the CSEC/BGCSE level, whereas Biology and Chemistry are compulsory at CAPE/A-Levels

OR

  • UWI Introductory year in Science & Technology Courses in Biology, Chemistry and one other OR Triple Major Associate from an approved community colleges degree majoring in Biology, Chemistry and one other subject with GPA greater than 3.5. 

OR

  • Equivalent qualifications (as determined from transcripts).

All applicants must present a Police Certificate of Character.
 

Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)

(Five years Full-Time (applicants must be at least 18 years old in the year of admission)

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O' Levels/ BGCSE (Grades A-C) in English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics AND three double units subjects in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics.  Applicants are required to attend an interview.

OR

  • UWI Introductory year in Science & Technology Courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics OR Triple Major Associate from an approved community college majoring in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics with a GPA greater than 3.5.

OR

  • Equivalent qualifications (as determined from transcripts).

Non-Academic Considerations

All candidates are required to submit a short autobiographic sketch outlining the reasons for their career choice (300 words or less). Candidates must also produce evidence of their involvement in relevant extra-curricular/co-curricular activities, socially-oriented projects and voluntary community service in the year prior to their application.

 

B.Sc. Radiological Science (formerly Diagnostic Imaging (Radiography)

 

Four years (full-time) and Five years (full-time)

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Levels/ BGCSE (Grades A-C) in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Physics 2 other subjects AND
    Three double units of CAPE/GCE A level or Equivalent: Biology, Mathematics or  Physics and 1 other subject OR

Four Years Full-Time (applicants should be at least 17 years old at the time of admission)

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) which must include English Language, Biology/Integrated Science/Human and Social Biology, Mathematics and two other approved subjects AND Two double Units at CAPE (one subject from Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and one subject from any of the other subject areas, as specified by the Nursing Council of Jamaica).
  • Applicants may be required to attend an interview.

 

Bachelor of Science Nursing (post RN) On-line

 

Three calendar years – Two courses per semester to include Summer

Applicants must be a registered Nurse who holds current, valid and active Registration in the jurisdiction of practice.

 

B.Sc. Physical Therapy

 

Three Years Full-Time (applicants should be at least 18 years old at time of admission)

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Level /BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) which must include English Language, Mathematics and Biology AND Two double Units CAPE subjects or 2 A- Level subjects, chosen from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology.
  • Complete 60 voluntary hours in a Physical Therapy facility at the time of admission; at least 30 of which must be spent in a general hospital. Candidate must make their own arrangements for doing voluntary hours. Applicant must attend an interview.

 

Bachelor of Basic Medical Sciences (BBMedSci)

 

Three years Full-Time

(Options: Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology)

  • Five CSEC (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics AND Two double Units CAPE subjects or 2 A- Level subjects chosen from Chemistry, Biology/Zoology, Physics/Mathematics OR UWI Preliminary Pure and Applied Science Courses – Chemistry, Life Sciences, Physics, Mathematics OR Equivalent qualifications (as determined from transcripts).
     
  • NOTE: Students registered in the Bachelor of Basic Medical Sciences Programme (BBMS) are not permitted to transfer to the MBBS Programme.  However, on completion of the BBMS programme, they may apply for admission to the MBBS Programme.  Please note that applicants must have achieved at least a pass in both CAPE Biology and Chemistry.

Faculty Of Law

 

Bachelor of Laws (LL.B)

Three years Full-Time

 

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O’ Level /BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C), which must include English Language AND Two double Units CAPE subjects or 2 GCE A Level (passes with highly competitive grades) OR An Associate Degree from an approved tertiary level institution with a GPA of 2.5 and above

OR

  • A Bachelors or Masters degree from an approved university.

Selection for admission is based on a point-system; therefore, applicants with three CAPE subjects (Units 1 and 2) would be at a distinct advantage OR an Associate degree from an approved tertiary level institution with a GPA of 2.5 and above OR a Bachelors or Masters degree from an approved university. There are no special subject requirements in addition to those necessary for Matriculation. However, successful entrants typically have highly competitive grades.

 

Faculty Of Engineering

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Engineering)

 

Three years Full-Time

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O’Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) which must include English Language, Mathematics and Physics AND Two double Units CAPE or 2 GCE A Level passes in Pure/Pure & Applied Mathematics and Physics OR Equivalent qualifications from an approved tertiary institution

NOTE: Holders of Associate degrees from approved Caribbean tertiary level institutions must possess a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.5
 

Pre-Engineering – 1-year programme

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O’Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C), which must include English Language, Mathematics and Physics
     

Faculty Of Science & Technology (B.Sc.)

 

Three Years Full-Time

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C), which must include English Language, Mathematics, and at least two approved laboratory science subjects AND Two double Units CAPE or 2 GCE A- Level subjects chosen from Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science.
     

Four Years Full-Time (Preliminary Level)

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Levels/BGCSE (Grades A-C), which must include English Language, Mathematics, and at least two approved laboratory science subjects.

Horticulture

  • Applicants must have passes at the CSEC level in the following: English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Geography, Chemistry and passes at the CAPE Level in Biology, Geography or Chemistry OR an Associate Degree in an appropriate discipline.
     

Actuarial Science

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) and/or GCE O'Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) which must include English Language, Mathematics AND Two double Units CAPE in Mathematics and one other subject with highly competitive grades.

 

Faculty Of Social Sciences (B.Sc.)

 

Three Years Full-Time

  • Five CSEC subjects (General Proficiency Grades I-III) or GCE O'Level/BGCSE subjects (Grades A-C) which must include English Language and Mathematics AND Two double Units CAPE subjects or 2 GCE A-Level subjects.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

English Language is compulsory for admission to all programmes of The University of the West Indies. Candidates who do not possess a Grade 1 in CSEC English A, a Grade A in GCE O’Level / BGCSE English Language, Grade 1 or 2 in CAPE Communication Studies or a Grade A in the GCE General Paper, are required to take an English Language Proficiency Test on entry.

Applicants whose first language is not English must provide satisfactory evidence of their competence in the language. You should have:

  • Scored a minimum total of 6.5 on the University of Cambridge IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or
  • Scored a minimum of 500 (paper-based) or 82* (computer-based) on the test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Other Acceptable Qualifications

  • Associate degrees from approved Caribbean tertiary level institutions with a minimum GAP of 2.5 and above are considered as having satisfied normal matriculation requirements for entry to certain faculties. In specific instances, credit/exemptions may be given in respect of Level 1 courses.  A higher GPA is required to obtain Credit/Exemption based on Associate of Science degree.
     

Non Regional Qualifications

  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme requires mastery in six subject groups, with at least three and not more than four of the six subjects taken at the higher level (HL) and the others at the standard level (SL).

Each subject is graded on a scale of 1 point (lowest) to 7 points (highest) with a minimum score of 24 points and satisfactory completion of three (3) compulsory core requirements, viz, the Extended Essay (EE), the Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and participation in CAS: Creativity, Action, and Service.  The highest possible score a Diploma Programme student can receive is 45 points. Core requirements:

In addition to studying in six (6) subject areas at the Standard and Higher levels, the IB Diploma includes: -

  1. Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
  2. Creativity, Action and Service [CAS]
  3. Extended Essay [EE]
     
  • SAT

For normal matriculation, students should present an acceptable high school transcript with a minimum GPA of 3.0, plus an acceptable SAT score of 1200.

For lower-level matriculation, students need to present an acceptable high school transcript (minimum GPA of 2.5) and an acceptable SAT score of 1050.

  • Advanced Placement (AP) 

For Normal Matriculation, students must earn AP grades of 3 or higher on four AP Exams in three of the five subject areas.

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)

Normal matriculation - Applicants must have an overall average of at least 60% of the six (6) Grade 12 UWI level courses.  [Faculty-specific requirements apply]

6 Grade 12 U/M level courses (excluding Co-op)
English-ENG4U is included in the 6 Grade 12 U/M level required courses
“D” Code in Language courses [in the usual “4” cases, i.e. Spanish – Level 4, which is equivalent to Grade 12.]

 

Mature Student

A mature student is a person who enters the University at the age of 21 years and over, and has been out of secondary school for at least five years. Such a person should demonstrate academic potential and have gained relevant academic knowledge and workplace experience. You will be required to present with your application, full details of your career. This includes a document outlining your knowledge development, employment record, and an official academic transcript. You must also submit certificates, documents, and references. In addition, you may need to take additional tests or participate in interviews as required by the Admissions Committee of the relevant Faculty.

UWI Inter-Campus Transfers

To transfer to another campus, follow these steps:

  1. Fill out a Mona transfer application form.

  2. Get the approval from the faculty after completion
  3. Submit the signed form to the Admissions & International Office which will forward it to the receiving campus.


Cross Campus Registration

  • Step 1 – Apply via the Automated Student Request System ASRS via SAS for Campus approval.  Click on request type “Study at Another Campus”.
  • Step 2 – Complete a "Study at Another Campus - Cross Campus Application Form" for departmental and Dean’s approval.
  • Step 3 – The student will submit the signed form to the Admissions & International Office, which will forward it to the Campus where the registration will take place.
     

Specially Admitted / Occasional Students
 

  • Take the form to the Faculty offering the course(s) and request the approval.
     
  • Submit the signed form to the Admissions Section along with the receipt of the J$1500 application fee that would have been paid at the University Bursary Cashier.  Please be advised that you would need to submit both the original and a copy of your birth certificate and academic qualifications. If you have completed studies from any tertiary institution, please request that the official transcript be sent to the Senior Assistant Registrar, Admissions Section. The address is:

  • Await confirmation from the Admissions Section while your application is being processed. Your acceptance letter will be sent by email.
  • Register for the course/s online by accessing the Student Administration System (SAS) and attend your classes.

A specially admitted student shall be allowed to take no more than (12) credits in any given year, and no more than a total of 24 credits under this category of registration.
