FIELDWORK/PRACTICUM

1.WHY DO YOU HAVE TO DO FIELDWORK/PRACTICUM? 

Fieldwork/Practicum is practical work experience in approved libraries under the supervision of a professional librarian. Fieldwork/Practicum is a compulsory prerequisite which must be met in order to meet graduation requirements. 

2.DOES FIELDWORK/PRACTICUM CARRY ANY CREDITS? 

Yes, three credits are awarded and the award of a degree is based on successful completion of the Fieldwork/Practicum. 

3.CAN FIELDWORK/PRACTICUM BE DONE AT ANY TIME? 

No, Fieldwork/Practicum is usually done in the summer after completion of level 2 courses. 

4.DO YOU GET PAID FOR FIELDWORK/PRACTICUM? 

No, however a few libraries may do so on their own initiatives.

5.ARE THERE PRE-REQUISUITES FOR FIELDWORK/PRACTICUM? 

Yes, students must complete or currently completing their Level II Courses. 

6.CAN FIELDWORK/PRACTICUM BE DONE IN THE FINAL YEAR?

Attachments are preferable at the end of Level II so that student can complete Fieldwork/Practicum experience in order to meet graduation requirement.

7.HOW DO YOU SELECT AN ORGANIZATION YOU WOULD LIKE TO GO TO?

Select an organization that will help one decide which type of library to work in later on. However, final placement rests with the Fieldwork Coordinator.

8.IF A PERSON IS EMPLOYED AT A LIBRARY DURING THE TIME HE/SHE IS EXPECTED TO BE DOING FIELDWORK/PRACTICUM, CAN THE PERSON BE ALLOWED TO DO THE FIELDWORK AT THAT LIBRARY?

No, fieldwork experience should expose students to additional environments and organizations. 

9. ARE PERSONS WITH ASSOCIATE DEGREES, WHO HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED FIELDWORK AS PART OF THEIR DEGREE PROGRAM, GET AN EXEMPTION FROM FIELDWORK/PRACTICUM?

No, this is a University of the West Indies requirement.

10. HOW/WHERE CAN I GET DETAILS ABOUT THE FIELDWORK/PRACTICUM?

11. HOW DO I APPLY FOR FIELDWORK/PRACTICUM?

You will also be required to formally register for the course on SAS 

IS THERE A LECTURER OR STAFF I CAN SPEAK TO IN REGARDS TO FIELDWORK/PRACTICUM?

Yes, students can address any queries relating to Fieldwork/Practicum to the Fieldwork Coordinator or to the Library Assistant who is also responsible for field work.

13. IS THERE A LIST OF THE LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL LIBRARIES THAT PARTICIPATE IN FIELDWORK?

Yes, students can request a sample of the list that outlining their libraries of interest whether local or international from the Fieldwork Coordinator or to the Library Assistant.

14. CAN I UNDERTAKE MY FIELDWORK/PRACTICUM AT TWO DIFFERENT LIBRARIES DURING THE SUMMER?

Yes, under ‘special’ circumstances the Fieldwork Coordinator can approve a student to carry out Fieldwork/Practicum at two separate libraries during the summer.

15. ARE WE ALLOWED TO CONTACT RESPECTIVE LIBRARIES AND ARRANGE OUR OWN FIELDWORK/PRACTICUM PLACEMENTS?

No, the Fieldwork coordinator is responsible for making all placement arrangements with reputable libraries and institutions. Please be advised that any arrangements made otherwise will not be approved.
