The event commemorates the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Ivan’s devastation of the Cayman Islands and Grenada, resulting in economic losses which totalled close to 200% of their annual GDP. Jamaica and another 6 countries in the Caribbean were also severely impacted. Regional losses for the event totalled over US$6 billion.
Remarks will be delivered by The Most Hon. Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The UWI; Most Hon. P.J. Patterson (former Prime Minister of Jamaica); and Ms Sandrea Maynard, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Global Affairs The UWI as well as CCRIF executives.
The panel discussion segment of the dialogue will be moderated by Professor Michael Taylor, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, The UWI.
Following the dialogue, the Ivan+20 Time Capsule Event will take place, where invited guests will place in the capsule items that paint a picture of the period before or during Hurricane Ivan, the present, and our hopes for the future. The time capsule will be re-opened in 20 years’ time – in 2044.
