UWI 75th Book Club connecting young people with authors, motivational speaker.
How often do you get the chance to meet the author of your favourite Literature textbook? Can you imagine lounging on a blanket on an immaculate lawn listening to the soothing voice of Jamaican poet Ann-Margaret Lim?
Well, on Thursday April 27th, 2023, scores of high school students, teachers, and book lovers will get an opportunity to cozy up with Ms. Lim, and Professor Paulette Ramsay, on The University Chapel Lawn at the Mona Campus.
Professor Ramsay will do a reading from her novel, Aunt Jen, and then field questions from the audience. Aunt Jen is a prescribed text in many Jamaican high schools. It tells the story of a young Jamaican girl desperate to discover and understand her identity. The reading will get under way at 1:30 pm.
At 2:30 pm, Ms. Lim takes over with a reading from her second poetry collection, Kingston Butter Cup, which made the poetry shortlist of the Bocas Prize.
Members of the public are welcome to attend both readings. Just remember to bring your blankets or lawn chairs for your comfort.
Light refreshments will be served.
These monthly readings are part of The UWI's 75th anniversary celebrations. "The 75 Book to Read During 2003" initiative aims to assist high school students recover from COVID-19 learning losses. It also seeks to connect students with motivational speakers, and promote peace education through Literature.
