We train world class healthcare workers in medical microbiology with a commitment to scholarship and research. We participate in offering core courses for several undergraduate programmes and provide training at the postgraduate level. Our initiatives also extend to maintaining a laboratory service that will facilitate the delivery of clinical and diagnostic services. We also provide oversight for the infection prevention and control and antibiotic stewardship programmes of the University Hospital of the West Indies.
Our vision is to be a department of excellence rooted in the Caribbean for education, training, research and service in health and well-being.
Welcome to the Department of Microbiology we are an academic department with heavy teaching responsibilities across the programs of the Faculty of Medical Sciences. The Department also has an active research program, geared toward responding to the agenda of Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. Coupled with our academic work, is an excellent record in providing clinical and public health diagnostic services to the University Hospital of the West Indies and other partners, including through the National Influenza Centre.
The Department has a long history of playing a key role in elucidating the epidemiology of viral infections, neglected tropical diseases, and emerging infectious diseases. Furthermore, antimicrobial and infection prevention and control have been the mainstay activities of our department. The Department provides a welcoming atmosphere for local and international scholars at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as we thrive and create the next generation of microbiologists to respond to local, regional, and global needs.
