Dr. Mandal speaks on Integrating Water Security in Climate Plans

Dr. Arpita Mandal (Geography and Geology) was one of the speakers at the Virtual Exchange Platform:2nd Session: Integrating Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction in NDCs. National Determined Contributions (NDCs) are the individual and voluntary commitments and goals of a country for post-2020 climate action with emphasis on actions that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The virtual exchange brought together national experts from the Caribbean region who are involved in the preparation of new/updated NDCs and consultants and institutions supporting the countries in this process. Though many Caribbean territories focus their NDCs on the energy sector, Dr. Mandal presented on issues impacting water security in the Caribbean and how recognizing and addressing these are critical to the region’s climate action plans. In addition to representing the UWI, she also represented the Global Water Partnership Caribbean. The virtual forum was held on July 10th and was organized by a number of partnering institutions including the United Nations framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
