Dr. Thera Edwards, a map curator and lecturer in the Department of Geography and Geology at the University of the West Indies, highlighted the significance of individual action in tackling climate change. Dr Edwards was addressing the Council of Voluntary Social Services (CVSS) recently convened sector meeting under the theme ‘SDG13 Climate Action – What Can NGOs Do to Combat Climate Change and its Impact?’ She stressed that the time to prevent a climate catastrophe is quickly running out. Dr. Edwards emphasized that everyone has a role to play and can take individual actions within their organizations and communities to address climate change. She provided recommendations for both NGOs and individuals, including reducing carbon emissions by planting trees, promoting resilient societies, investing in sustainable solutions, and addressing climate risks. Dr. Edwards also emphasized the importance of inspecting buildings for resilience and ensuring adequate insurance coverage. She advised safeguarding important items before storms and implementing data management and backup plans. Additionally, she encouraged water conservation practices and awareness of location-specific risks associated with flooding, increased temperature, and drought. Participants were urged to identify areas for action in their work, community, and home spaces to enhance climate readiness and resilience.
