The Faculty of Science and Technology (FST),  The UWI Mona  proudly participated in the Relay For Life, coordinated by the Jamaica Cancer Society, on June 9-10, 2023, demonstrating our commitment to combatting the devastating disease known as cancer.

The event, held at the Police Officers Club, brought together representatives from various departments within the FST to honor cancer survivors and remember those, including some of our UWI colleagues, who lost their battle with the illness. Heartfelt tributes were incorporated in the FST/UWI booth to Dr. Phylicia Ricketts from the Physics department, Mr. St. Elmo Whyte from the Mathematics department and Dr. Wendy McLean Cooke from the Faculty of Social Sciences. Luminaria bags were placed in honor of their memory, and in honor of other loved ones of our FST family who succumbed to cancer.

The FST/UWI booth featured a main display by the Natural Products Institute (NPI), coordinated by Dr. Sheena Francis and her team, showcasing the cancer-prevention activities of local teas. The NPI team were kept busy providing information and answering questions about the potential benefits of natural products in cancer prevention and the Institute’s research in this area. The Department of Chemistry further captivated with "Milk Art" and "Writing with Fire" experiments. These engaging displays highlighted science in our everyday life.
