FST Represented at Workshop held at UN ESCAP in Bangkok

A Workshop on Science, Technology and Innovations (STI) for SDGs was held at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC) of The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) in Bangkok, Thailand on February 27 –March 1, 2019. The workshop was co-organized by The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), ESCAP, and The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The STI workshop was a forum for discussions on innovation in entrepreneurship, teaching, technology, and other sectors with respect to finding solutions for the SDGs. The overall workshop addressed notable challenges in developing STI for specific circumstances in both developed and developing countries. It was also acknowledged that tailoring STI to the needs of developing countries requires not just expertise from globally established institutions, but also from locals who understand the needs for which these technologies are being developed. The seminar ‘Collaborations for innovative technology solutions: a capacity building seminar for technologists and decision makers’ was also held as part of the workshop on March 1. This was a much smaller and more targeted session, during which experiences were shared regarding the contribution of collaborations and government partnerships, academia, and international organisations to innovation and entrepreneurship. The University of the West Indies, was represented by Dr. Kimberly Stephenson, lecturer in the Department of Life Sciences, who made a presentation entitled ‘The Role of Academia in Fostering Innovation’. The presentation pointed out that academia helps to drive innovation by defining the boundaries of the issue, quantifying the impacts, and providing the framework for solutions.
