Lanceford Sterling was recently awarded a PhD in Applied Physics (2024) from the Faculty of Science and Technology at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona. His journey began at Kingston College, where a dedicated physics teacher inspired his early interest in the sciences during CSEC preparations, cementing his ambition in the applied sciences. He went on to complete a BSc in Medical Physics and Computer Science at the UWI, supported by a Ministry of National Security scholarship. Throughout his postgraduate studies, he received the Departmental Award and the UWI Postgraduate Scholarship, which supported his progression in advanced research in the MPhil/PhD programme.
Supervised by Dr. Louis-Ray Harris and Dr. Kamali Carroll, his doctoral thesis, titled “Assessment of the Relationship Between Electromagnetic Radiation Emitted by Wireless Devices and Sperm Quality in Men Seeking Infertility Treatment”, investigates the effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation (RF-EMR) from wireless devices on Jamaican male fertility, focusing on changes in semen quality. This research, the first of its kind in Jamaica and the Caribbean, addresses significant health concerns around wireless technology use and male infertility, an issue affecting 20% of Jamaican couples. Findings from his study, are intended to inform evidence-based guidelines and encourage safer technology practices for reproductive health.
As a lecturer in Medical Physics, he is also passionate about using technology to enhance learning. With additional experience as an audio-visual engineer, he brings practical, innovative perspectives to his teaching, creating a technology-enriched environment for future scientists. Beyond academia, he volunteers as an audio-visual engineer in his church community, blending his passion for technology and service to support educational and community-focused initiatives.
